Cruise

Present

“Cruise,” she says, as her eyes connect with mine and a little crease forms, pinching the skin between her brows.

My name in her mouth sounds like nothing else and I wonder how I thought I could possibly go the rest of my life without hearing it again. Why I even thought I’d want to.

“Av-Avery,” I stutter, and it’s not only that memory that comes rushing back, all my emotions, all the hurt and pain and heartache, all the love and passion and desire, come rushing to the surface and I can’t hold them back.

I sink to my knees by her chair.

“Avery,” I choke, as great violent sobs wrack through my body and tears bubble in the corner of my eyes. I’m only vaguely aware, as my vision swims with water, of the scraping of chairs and the shuffling of feet until it’s just the two of us alone in the kitchen.

I take her cold hands in mine.

“I’m so sorry, Avery. So sorry. Please forgive me. Please come back to me. I can’t … I can’t …”

“Cruise,” she says and I peer up into her face. There are tears in her eyes too, trailing down her cheeks.

I wince. I’ve caused her so much pain, so much fucking unnecessary pain and heartache.

“I’m so sorry for what I did, so sorry for the way I treated you, so sorry for everything.”

“You really, really hurt me,” she whispers, her voice frail and pained.

“I know. I’ll do anything, if you just … if you just forgive me, forgive all of us.”

“Why did you do it? Why didn’t you trust in us?”

I stroke the pads of my thumbs over her fingers wanting to soothe away all the pain I’ve caused.

“Because … because I’m an idiot.”

“You’re not, Cruise,” she says resolutely, “that isn’t the reason. And if you want to repair things between us, if you want me to ever forgive you, you need to make me understand, because if I don't, how can I trust you? How would I know you wouldn’t hurt me over and over again?”

“I never will. If you forgive us, Avery, I’ll spend every day of the rest of my life making things up to you. I’ll do whatever you want, anything.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

I drop my gaze to my knees.

The truth hurts, the past does too. But nothing hurts as badly as not having this woman in my life.

“Cruise,” she says, touching my cheek, “I want to forgive you, please, please give me a reason to.”

I take a deep breath in, feeling my ribs expand and her scent rush into my lungs.

“It happened before.”

She frowns. “You rejected another omega?”

“Not like that. We didn’t reject her.”

Her frown grows deeper. “I don’t understand.”

“I fell in love,” I say. “At least that’s what I thought it was.” I stare into her dark eyes. “Now I know what it’s really like to be in love.”

A little color spills into her cheeks and gives me enough hope to continue with the story.

“We were dating for months – maybe half a year.
